In ancient legend Thetis concealed her son Achilles on Skíros; Neoptolemus, son of Achilles by Deidamia, was reared on the island; and Theseus was killed by Lycomedes there. Skíros was conquered c.469 B.C. by Athenians led by Cimon. The English poet Rupert Brooke, who died (1915) during the Gallipoli campaign of World War I, is buried on Skíros. Skiros(also Skyros, Scyros), an island in the Aegean Sea belonging to Greece; the largest island in the archipelago of the Northern Sporades. Skiros has an area of approximately 210 sq km. Mountains predominate in the southeast, with elevations to 793 m. They are primarily composed of limestones and are covered with maquis. There is a developed karstic topography. The northwest is a hilly plain. Skiros has an iron ore deposit near the city of Linaria, as well as vineyards and olive groves. Sheep and goats are raised.
