During the uprising the rebels destroyed the residence of Tabriz’s governor, as well as the homes of the nobility and ranking clergy. To mollify the populace, Shah Tahmasp I (1524–76) appointed a new governor, but the rebels refused to put down their arms. The shah’s forces finally quelled the uprising, and the city was exempted from the payment of state taxes.
