Tabriz Uprising of 1571–73

Tabriz Uprising of 1571–73

a rebellion by the artisans and the poor in Tabriz, caused by heavy taxation. However, what touched off the uprising was the repression of the authorities. During the uprising the rebels destroyed the residence of Tabriz’s governor, as well as the homes of the nobility and ranking clergy. To mollify the populace, Shah Tahmasp I (1524–76) appointed a new governor, but the rebels refused to put down their arms. The shah’s forces finally quelled the uprising, and the city was exempted from the payment of state taxes.
