Radio Astrophysical Observatory

(full name, Radio Astrophysical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR), an astronomical scientific research institution organized in 1967 from the Astrophysical Laboratory of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR.

The observatory’s observation station is located 5 km from the village of Baldone (38 km from Riga). Its chief instruments include a Schmidt telescope with a mirror diameter of 120 cm, two 55-cm Cassegrain reflectors with electrophotometers, and a radio telescope with a parabolic antenna 10 m in diameter. The observatory is chiefly involved in photometric and spectral research on late-type stars and studies of solar radio emission at decimeter and centimeter wavelengths. Since 1973, the observatory has published a series of studies under the title Issledovanie Solntsa i krasnykh zvezd (A Study of the Sun and Red Stars). The library holdings number more than 38,000.
