Robert Emden
Emden, Robert
Born Mar. 4, 1862, in St. Gallen; died Oct. 8, 1940, in Zurich. Swiss astrophysicist and geophysicist.
Emden received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Strasbourg in 1887. In 1899 he became a docent at the Technische Hochschule in Munich. Emden’s chief works were devoted to the thermodynamic, aerodynamic, and hydrodynamic problems of astrophysics. His most important studies dealt with the equilibrium state of a gaseous sphere; his work in this field was applied to the theory of stellar structure.
