Slade (pop culture)Although his comic-book sobriquet is the more menacing Deathstroke the Terminator, Slade Wilson uses only his first name as a mysterious mercenary in the animated Teen Titans TV series (2003–2006). Wearing a black bodysuit with steelgrey armored parts, the animated Slade also wears a black and orange mask. Extremely athletic and strong, Slade is also possibly enhanced by his suit. His basso voice is provided by actor Ron Perlman, best known as the Beast in the Beauty and the Beast TV series (1987–1990) and as the title character in Hellboy (2004). In the first two seasons of Teen Titans, Slade mainly acted through other agents he hires, including Jinx, Mammoth, and Gizmo from the HIVE Academy, and through Thunder and Lightning. Apparently in the market for an apprentice, Slade also blackmailed Robin into helping him, until his plans were foiled and Robin and the Titans escaped unscathed. The second season of Titans found Slade recruiting a confused young girl named Terra, who he manipulated into infiltrating and helping break the Titans down. Eventually Terra turned against Slade and helped defeat him, sending him down into a lava pit. Slade appeared to have died, but in season three, Robin learned that somehow, Slade might still be alive! Slade's resurrection was revealed in 2005's fourth season, wherein Slade targeted Raven, on behalf of her father, the demonic Trigon. Slade now wielded mystical eldritch powers that could burst from the runes on his hands, and the runic Mark of Scath on his forehead. He made a deal to help Trigon bring about the end of the world in exchange for Trigon restoring him to life in a flesh-and-blood body. After Trigon double-crossed him, Slade got his body back from the demonic abyss on his own, and helped the Titans defeat the demon. Numerous Slade toys and action figures were released by Bandai from 2004 forward. |
