Topozero
a lake in the northern part of the Karelian ASSR. The lake, which covers an area of 986 sq km, is located at an elevation of 109 m. It extends north-northwest to south-southeast. Its shores, especially the eastern one, are indented. The lake has many islands, with a total area of 63 sq km. It is fed mainly by snow. The water level is highest in June and lowest in April. The lake freezes in late October or November, and the ice breaks up in May. When the Kuma Hydroelectric Power Plant was built in 1966, the lake became part of the Kuma Reservoir. The lake is used for floating timber and for fishing, especially for cisco, grayling, whitefish, and smelt.
