terahertz gap

[′ter·ə‚hərts ‚gap] (electromagnetism) A region of the electromagnetic spectrum, roughly in the frequency range from 0.05 to 20 terahertz, that lies at the boundary between the microwave region where electronic devices such as high-speed transistors operate and the infrared and visible regions where photonic devices such as lasers operate, and whose exploitation has therefore suffered from a lack of bright sources or coherent sensitive detectors.
