Te Rangihaeata

Te Rangihaeata

Years of birth and death unknown. Chief of the Ngati Toa Maori tribe in New Zealand; leader of a revolt of the Maori of North Island against British colonization.

In 1843, Rangihaeata and another chief of his tribe demanded the removal of British settlements from the tribe’s lands. When the colonial authorities refused, Rangihaeata and his fellow tribesmen destroyed the boundary markers set up by the colonists and burned their dwellings. The Maori revolt was crushed.
