 region, on the Tamiš River near its confluence with the Danube. It is a river port for nearby Belgrade and an industrial center. There is a fine old church containing valuable paintings and other works of Serbian religious art.

Pančevo

 

a city in the Vojvodina autonomous region of Yugoslavia, in the Socialist Republic of Serbia. Population, 55,000 (1971). Port on the left bank of the Danube, at the confluence of the Danube and the Tamiš, near Belgrade.

A railroad junction, Pančevo has a petrochemical combine and a plant that produces mineral fertilizers. Its machine-building industry includes equipment for aviation, automotive, and electrical industries. Other industries include food-processing and the production of glass, wood products, and textiles.
