Veleda
Veleda
(Velleda), in the first century A.D. one of the prophetesses of the ancient Germans.
According to the Roman historian Tacitus, Veleda came from the tribe of the Bructeri; lived as a recluse in a high tower, wrapped in mystery and highly revered. She sent her prophecies and answers to questions by special middlemen. Veleda played an important role in the uprising of Civilis, calling up the German tribes to war against the Romans and promising victory. She died in Roman captivity.
