[′vē·lə·jər] (invertebrate zoology) A mollusk larval stage following the trochophore, distinguished by an enlarged girdle of ciliated cells (velum).

Veliger

the larvae of many marine mollusks, similar to the trochophore (only Dreissensia among the freshwater mollusks). The veliger has a “leg,” an intestine, an eye, organs of equilibrium (statocysts), an embryonic shell (protoconch) into which the anterior part of the body is drawn in case of danger, and a velum—one, two, or more complexly dissected lobes covered with cilia and used for locomotion and capture of food. Certain veligers stay suspended in the water a long time, and within several weeks they travel with the current throughout the Atlantic Ocean. After settling to the bottom, the veliger is transformed into an adult mollusk.
