Pospelov, Gennadii Nikolaevich

 

Born July 18 (30), 1899, in Kostroma. Soviet literary critic.

Pospelov graduated from Moscow State University in 1925, and became a professor there in 1838. His works, published since 1925, have dealt with theories of literature, the history of Russian literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the methodology of literary criticism. They advance original concepts that draw on a wealth of historical and literary material.

Pospelov’s works of the 1960’s and 1970’s include The Aesthetic and the Artistic (1965), Problems of Literary Style (1970), Problems of the Historical Development of Literature (1972), and The History of 19th-century Russian Literature: 1840–1860 (2nd ed. 1972).
