Pospelov, Germogen Sergeevich

 

Born May 12 (25), 1914, in the city of Orekhovo-Zuevo, Moscow Oblast. Soviet scientist in the field of automatic control. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966). Member of the CPSU since 1943.

Pospelov graduated from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute in 1940 and served as an engineer in an air regiment from 1941 to 1946. From 1946 to 1964 he taught at the N. E. Zhukovskii Air Force Engineering Academy, where he became a professor in 1957. Between 1964 and 1973 he served as deputy chairman and chairman of the section on applied problems of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. At the same time, beginning in 1967, he was deputy academician-secretary of the department of mechanics and control processes of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and, beginning in 1969, head of a subdepartment at the Moscow Physicotechnical Institute. In 1974 he became head of a laboratory at the Computer Center of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Pospelov’s main works deal with the automation of aircraft, the theory of nonlinear automatic control systems, and the theory of control of large systems. Pospelov has been awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1972), four orders, and various medals.
