1965–, Welsh bass-baritone, b. Pant Glas as Bryn Terfel Jones. One of the most acclaimed singers of his era, he has a voice of rare warmth, richness, and power. His rise to public prominence when he won (1989) the Lieder Prize in the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. His operatic debut was a year later at the Welsh National Opera, where he sang Guglielmo in Mozart's Così fan tutte. Terfel debuted in England and the United States in 1991, at the Salzburg Festival and Covent Garden in 1992, and at the Metropolitan Opera in 1994. The works of Mozart are prominent in his repertoire, which also includes those of Wagner, Puccini, Verdi, Stravinsky, and such British composers as Britten, Delius, and Vaughan Williams. He also is noted for his performances of lieder, in oratorios, and of Broadway songs.
