Established: Authorized on September 27, 1890; transferred to National Park Service on June 10, 1933.

Special Features:One of the largest urban parks in the United States, this woodedpreserve contains a wide range of natural, historical, and recreationalfeatures in the midst of Washington, D.C. Points of interest include:the Nature Center and Planetarium, the focal point for activitiesrelated to the park's natural history; the Old Stone House, the oldesthouse in Washington; Peirce Mill, a gristmill where corn and wheat wereground into flour using water power from Rock Creek; and the remains ofCivil War earthen fortifications, including Fort Stevens, the site ofthe only battle within the District of Columbia during the Civil War.
