Size: 75,000 acres. Only 28 acres are federally owned; the remainder of the river corridor is nonfederal, with most land under private ownership.
Established: Authorized on November 10, 1978.
Location:73.4 miles of the Delaware River between Hancock and Sparrow Bush, New York, along the Pennsylvania-New York border. Access routes for the southern portion of the river include NY 17, I-84, and US 6. For the northern portion, access routes include NY 17 and NY 191. NY 97 follows the entire New York shore of the river area.
Facilities:Campgrounds (privately owned), rest rooms (é), cabin rental, lodging, groceries, restaurant/snacks, boat rental, boat ramp, visitor center (é), museum/exhibit.
Activities:Camping, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, fishing, hunting, auto touring, guided tour.
Special Features:The longest free-flowing river in the Northeast includes riffles and Class I and II rapids between placid pools and eddies. This unit of the National Park Service is also home to John Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct, the oldest surviving wire suspension bridge in the United States; and the Zane Grey Museum, located at the one-time home of the American west novelist in Lackawaxen, PA.
