Pankhurst, Estelle Sylvia

Born May 5, 1882, in Manchester; died Sept. 27, 1960, in Addis Ababa. Active in the English workers’ movement. Publicist.

Pankhurst took a pacifist stand during World War I. After the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia, she spoke out against the anti-Soviet military intervention. She participated in the second congress of Comintern, and in 1921 she joined the Communist Party of Great Britain but was soon expelled because of insubordination to party discipline. She wrote articles in the press against fascism. From 1956 she lived in Ethiopia and wrote a number of books devoted to Ethiopian history and culture.
