seed core seed core[′sēd ‚kȯr] (nucleonics) A reactor core that includes a relatively small volume of highly enriched uranium, surrounded by a much larger volume of natural uranium or thorium in a blanket; as a result of fission in the seed uranium, neutrons are supplied to the blanket, which is made to furnish a substantial fraction of the core power. Also known as spiked core. |
