Seed Crop
Seed Crop
in seed production, a biennial plant grown for its seed. Various root crops (including sugar beets), onions, and cabbage are grown from seed produced by seed crops. The first year of growth of seed crops is no different from that of plants that are not raised for seed. In the fall the most healthy plants of a particular variety are dug up and kept until spring, some-times in the form of seed stalks (for cabbage), in special storehouses. In the spring the seed crops are planted in the open ground, where they attain full development and bear seed.
