单词 trestlework
释义

Trestlework

Trestlework

a bridgelike structure that is built over land or water and is used for such purposes as the passage of vehicles or pedestrians, the running of service lines, or loading and unloading operations. A trestlework consists of a series of supports and spans; it usually has a considerable number of spans of identical design. A trestlework may be constructed of reinforced concrete, steel, or timber. Depending on purpose, materials, and local conditions, a trestlework may be a beam structure or a frame structure.

Trestleworks are often elements of works related to bridges over large rivers and are situated on floodplains. An example of such trestleworks is the shore sections of the bridge built in 1971 over the Belaia River near the city of Ufa; the bridge was constructed of precast reinforced concrete and has spans of 42 m and 33 m. Trestleworks are also erected on watercourses that have low current velocities and no drifting of ice.

Trestleworks are used as overpasses over the tracks at railroad stations. For example, a trestlework over the railroad junction at Moscow’s Riga Station was built in 1975. A 340-m-long section of the trestlework is curvilinear and has spans of 25 to 33 m that are enclosed by a continuous-truss system of precast reinforced-concrete structures.

Trestleworks erected at urban intersections usually do not have earth embankments, making it possible to use the space under such a trestlework for the passage of urban traffic or for other purposes. An example is the trestlework at Samotechnaia Square in Moscow. In large foreign cities—for example, Berlin, New York, and Tokyo—long elevated highways are carried on trestleworks. Pedestrian overpasses are used mostly for crossing the tracks at railroad stations.

At industrial enterprises, trestleworks are used as crane platforms, over which cranes travel, as unloading platforms for conveying raw materials and finished products, and as galleries for laying industrial pipelines. At construction sites, trestleworks are used to transport building materials and items as well as to move cranes and assembly cranes.

At offshore oil fields, trestleworks built on piles are used to connect drilling platforms with the shore and with one another. In the Caspian Sea, the petroleum workers’ urban-type settlement of Neftianye Kamni was built on a trestlework system 40 km from the Apsheron Peninsula.
