Tret’Iakov, Petr Nikolaevich

Born Oct. 30 (Nov. 12), 1909, in Kostroma; died June 12, 1976, in Leningrad. Soviet archaeologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958). Member of the CPSU from 1940.

Tret’iakov was editor in chief of the journal Voprosy istorii (Problems of History) from 1950 to 1953. From 1951 to 1959 he was director of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and a senior research worker at the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Tret’iakov’s main works deal with Slavic and Eastern European archaeology and history and with the formation of the old Russian nationality. His most important excavations were the gorodishche (site of a fortified town) of Berezniaki and ancient settlements in the Desna River basin.

Tret’iakov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1952. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and three other orders.
