Radzievskii, Aleksei

Born July 31 (Aug. 13), 1911, in the city of Uman’. Soviet military commander. General of the army (1972); professor (1961). Member of the CPSU from 1931.

The son of a Ukrainian peasant, Radzievskii was a worker. He joined the Red Army in 1929 and graduated from a cavalry school in 1931, from the M. V. Frunze Military Academy in 1938, and from the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1941. Radzievskii saw service in the Great Patriotic War (1941–45) as chief of staff of a cavalry division and of a cavalry corps from July 1941 to February 1944 on the Western and Southwestern fronts. From February 1944 until the end of the war he was chief of staff and commander of the Second Guards Tank Army on the Second Ukrainian and First Byelorussian fronts.

Radzievskii held responsible positions in the army after the war. He became commander of the Northern Group of Forces in September 1950, commander of the forces of the Turkestan Military District in July 1952, commander of the armored and mechanized troops in April 1953, and commander of the forces of the Odessa Military District in May 1954. He further served as first deputy chief of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR from July 1959, chief of the Main Directorate of Military Educational Institutions of the Ministry of Defense from April 1968, and chief of the M. V. Frunze Military Academy from July 1969.

Radzievskii was a deputy to the fifth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, six Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of Suvorov First Class, the Order of Kutuzov First Class, the Order of Suvorov Second Class, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the Red Star, various medals, and five foreign orders.
