Raeff, Marc

(1923– ) Russian specialist, educator; born in Moscow, Russia. Emigrating to America to escape World War II (1941), he finished his education and taught history first at Clark University, Worcester, Mass. (1949–61). He taught longest at Columbia University (1961), where he focused largely on Russian history and was named Bakhmeteff Professor of Russian Studies (1973). He was a member of the U.S. delegation to the Soviet-American Historical Colloquium (1972) and to the Polish-American Historical Colloquium (1974). He was the author of numerous books on Russia.
