In west-central NM, southwest of Santa Fe, original county; organized Jan 8, 1852 (prior to statehood); annexed Santa Ana County 1876. Name Origin: Spanish for 'little Bernal,' possibly for a young member of the Gonzales-Bernal family who lived in the area as early as 1680. It may also have been named for Fray Juan Bernal, a friend of one of the community leaders
