Karieva, Bernara Rakhimovna

 

Born Jan. 28, 1936, in Tashkent. Soviet ballerina. People’s Artist of the USSR (1973). Member of the CPSU since 1967.

In 1955, Karieva graduated from the Moscow Choreographic School, where she studied under M. A. Kozhukhova, and was accepted into the company of the Navoi Uzbek Theater of Opera and Ballet. Her parts have included Odette-Odile in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Maria in Asafev’s The Fountain of Bakhchisarai, the title role in Shchedrin’s Anna Karenina, Mekhri in Leviev’s Sukhail’ and Mekhri, and Sonni in Ashrafi’s The Amulet of Love.

Karieva, a recipient of the State Prize of the Uzbek SSR in 1970, has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and several medals.
