Wainwright, Jonathan

Wainwright, Jonathan (Mayhew)

(1883–1953) soldier; born in Walla Walla, Wash. He graduated from West Point in 1906, saw combat service in France in World War I, and held a series of staff appointments before being assigned to the Philippines in 1940. He led the withdrawal into the Bataan defense lines, where U.S. and Filipino forces surrendered to the Japanese in April 1942; Wainwright himself held out on Corregidor for another month. He spent three years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp.
