Papen Franz von Pa·pen P0050500 (pä′pən), Franz von 1879-1969. German politician and diplomat who served as chancellor (1932) and then as vice chancellor (1933-1934) under Adolf Hitler. Although he initially denounced some Nazi Party policies, later, as ambassador to Austria (1934-1938), he pursued policies that led to Germany's annexation of Austria. |
