papillary mesothelioma

A usually solitary lesion measuring 0.5 to 5.0 cm, which typically arises on the peritoneal surface of premenopausal women age 30 to 40, and is not associated with asbestos exposure. Papillary mesotheliomas consist of delicate well-formed papillae lined by bland cuboidal cells; occasional cords of cells extend into the dense hyalinised stroma, simulating malignant infiltration (pseudoinvasion), but lack a desmoplastic stromal reaction and thus are similar to the reaction seen in intraductal papillomas of the breast which become sclerotic.
