He was (with Paul Andrew) winner of the competition for the design of the Grande Arche de la Défense (illus.), Paris, France (1983), a huge trapezoidal structure with a hollow center, which terminates the axis that runs from the Tuileries Gardens in the east through the Arc de Triomphe to La Défense.
