Torii Ryuzo

Torii Ryuzo

 

Born 1870; died 1953. Japanese ethnographer and archaeologist; professor at the University of Tokyo.

Torii worked on ethnographic archaeological expeditions in Manchuria and Inner Mongolia. Until World War II (1939–45) he headed the Torii Institute of Anthropological Research, which he had founded. In the 1940’s he was a professor at the University of Peking. He returned to Japan in 1952.

Torii was the author of several works on the archaeology, ethnic history, and anthropology of continental East Asia and Japan. His main work is Prehistoric Japan (1919).
