Rainbow Bridge National Monument,

160 acres (65 hectares), S Utah; est. 1910. Rainbow Bridge, the largest natural bridge in the world, is a symmetrical, pink, sandstone arch, 309 ft (94 m) high, 33 ft (10 m) wide, with a 278-ft (85-m) span. Located in one of the most rugged and remote regions of the United States, it was discovered in 1909 by an expedition that set out to find the great stone arch rumored by the Native Americans. Established: Proclaimed on May 30, 1910. While Rainbow Bridge is a separate unit of the National Park Service, it is proximate to and administered by Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (see separate entry for description).
Location:In southern Utah. Accessible only by boat or by a 13-mile hike (with permit from the Navajo Nation). By boat across Lake Powell, it is 50 miles (4.5 hours round-trip) from Wahweap, Bullfrog, or Halls Crossing to Rainbow Bridge. The two trails leading to the park originate near Navajo Mountain.
Facilities:Boat dock, rest rooms.
Activities:Hiking.
Special Features:Largest of the world's known natural bridges, this symmetrical, salmon-pink sandstone span rises 290 feet above the floor of Bridge Canyon.
