spring scale test, SSTA test of a person's ability to stand upright without loss of balance when a spring attached to his or her waist is pulled horizontally away from the front of the body and then suddenly released. One pound of force is added to the spring after each successfully tolerated tug and release. The maximum percentage of a person's total body weight that can be maintained using the spring without taking a step to stabilize himself or herself provides an indication of the risk of falling. |
