Rainey, Henry Thomas

(1860–1934) U.S. representative; born in Carrollton, Ill. A lawyer, he was master in chancery for Greene County, Ill. (1887–95). A Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives (1903–21), he would spend most of his life in Congress, with one break as a farmer after his only election loss. Returning to the House (1923–34), he became majority leader, then Speaker of the House (1933–34), before his untimely death.
