Postpartum hemolytic uremic syndrome An idiopathic condition with a poor prognosis, characterized by renal failure, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, DIC, beginning from days to 10 wks after a normal pregnancy and delivery; PRF may be preceded by HTN, proteinuria or preeclampsia Clinical Vomiting, diarrhea, flu-like illness may precede the oliguric or anuric phases of acute renal failure accompanied by hemolysis and coagulopathy Management No therapy is consistently effective; early diagnosis, control of HTN and early dialysis may be preventive Prognosis Complete recuperation of renal function occurs in only 10%.
