Rodney Arismendi
Arismendi, Rodney
Born Mar. 21, 1913, in Río Branco, Cerro Largo Department. Figure in the workers’ movement of Uruguay. Journalist by profession. Member of the Communist Party of Uruguay (CPU) since 1931.
From 1936 to 1939, Arismendi was secretary of the Federation of Communist Youth of Uruguay; he belonged to the party’s district committee in the city of Montevideo. Since 1937 he has been a member of the Central Committee of the CPU. From 1940 to 1941 he was the editor in chief of the party’s central organ, the newspaper Justicia, and from 1941 to 1944 he was editor in chief of the communist newspaper Diario Popular. In 1944 he became a member of the Executive Committee of the Central Committee of the CPU. He was secretary of the party committee of the Department of Montevideo between 1946 and 1950. During the period 1951–55 he was secretary of the National Committee of the Communist Party, and from July to October 1955 he was general secretary of the National Committee of the CPU. In October 1955 he became first secretary of the Central Committee of the CPU. Since 1956 he has been editor in chief of the CPU’s theoretical journal Estudios. He has been a deputy to Parliament since 1946.
