Vladimír Skalicka

Skalička, Vladimír

 

Born Aug. 19, 1909, in Prague. Czech linguist. Corresponding member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (1964).

Skalička studied in Prague, Budapest, and Helsinki from 1927 through 1933. He became an instructor at Charles University in 1936 and was named a professor there in 1946. A member of the Linguistic Circle of Prague, he has worked on problems of theoretical linguistics and linguistic typology. Skalička was the founder of the systemic-functional school of typology known as characterology.
