Approved Mental Health Professional

Approved Mental Health Professional

A position in UK social and health care services which is similar to the role of Approved Social Worker (ASW), which it replaced with the 2007 amendment of the Mental Health Act 1983. It differs from ASW in that the role can be assumed by other health professionals, including community psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists and psychologists, not just social workers. AMHPs work with doctors and play a central role in deciding if a person should be “sectioned”, which is UK Mental Healthspeak for being detained without their consent.
