Up to 2007, ASWs had specialist training and experience in identifying disorders of mental health. They were familiar with the problems experienced by users of mental health services and their families, and were employed by local authority Social Services, working in hospital and in the community as part of community mental health teams, coordinating care for people in need, helping them with housing and welfare benefits, and working closely with health professionals and doctors to assess whether a person needed hospital admission.
