Potanin Glacier

the largest valley glacier of the Altai, in the Mongolian People’s Republic. Located at the point where the Tabyn-Bogdo-Ola massif adjoins the mountains of the Mongolian Altai, the glacier measures 19 km long and up to 2.5 km wide; its area is approximately 50 sq km. The Potanin Glacier descends to an elevation of 2,900 m; its base is covered with moraine. Water from the melting ice flows into the Kobdo River basin. The glacier was discovered by V. V. Sapozhnikov in 1905 and named in honor of G. N. Potanin.
