a river in Guyana, a left tributary of the Essequibo. Measuring approximately 180 km long, the Potaro originates on the Guyana Plateau. When the river flows into the Guyana Lowland, it forms numerous rapids and waterfalls, the largest of which is Kaieteur Fall. Kaieteur National Park is situated in the Potaro River basin.
