velocity head
velocity head n (General Engineering) the velocity of a fluid expressed in terms of the head or static pressure required to produce that velocity. It equals ρν/2 where ρ is the density of the fluid and ν is the velocity. In hydrology the density of water can be written 1/G where G is the gravitational constant velocity head
velocity head[və′läs·əd·ē ‚hed] (fluid mechanics) The square of the speed of flow of a fluid divided by twice the acceleration of gravity; it is equal to the static pressure head corresponding to a pressure equal to the kinetic energy of the fluid per unit volume. velocity headOf a fluid moving with a given velocity: the equivalent height through which a body must fall to acquire the same velocity.velocity pressureThe difference between dynamic (or total) pressure and static pressure. Also called a velocity head. |
