A highly nonspecific term of art referring to any epithelial cell in which the nucleus has a wrinkled or crumpled hyperchromatic nucleus, and seems to “swim” in a cell with little to no discernible cytoplasm.Examples
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas, chromophobe-type renal cell carcinoma, clear cell carcinoma of the kidney, high-grade squamous intraepithelial neoplasia (severe dysplasia) in cytology specimens from the uterine cervix.
