Raisz, Erwin (Josephus)

(1893–1968) cartographer, geographer; born in Locse, Hungary. He came to the U.S.A. in 1923, working first for the American Geographical Society in New York City, and later for Harvard's Institute of Geographical Exploration (1930s to 1950s), producing hand drawn maps with great character and elegant calligraphy. His General Cartography (1938) was the first book of its kind in the English language and remained so for approximately 15 years. His Principles of Cartography was published in 1962.
