Rogier, Charles Latour

Born Aug. 12, 1800, in St. Quentin; died May 27, 1885, in Brussels. Belgian statesman; one of the leaders of the Liberal Party.

During the Revolution of 1830, Rogier commanded a detachment of volunteers in Brussels. He was a member of the provisional government (1831) and head of the government in the periods 1847–52 and 1857–68. In an attempt to prevent the spread of the Revolution of 1848–9 to Belgium, the Rogier government enacted several liberal reforms, including anticlerical and school reforms. Rogier retired from politics in 1868.
