Seignobos, Charles

(shärl` sānyōbō`), 1854–1942, French historian. He taught at the Univ. of Paris and wrote many works on French and European history and civilization, some being contributions to the series edited by Ernest LavisseLavisse, Ernest
, 1842–1922, French historian. He was for many years a professor at the Sorbonne. His early works deal chiefly with the history of Prussia, particularly Frederick the Great.

 and Alfred Rambaud. A number of these are widely used as textbooks in France. Seignobos's most outstanding book is his Histoire politique de l'Europe contemporaine (1897). Noted for his clear and unbiased narrative, Seignobos emphasized political history rather than social and economic change.

Born Sept. 10, 1854, in Lamastre; died Apr. 24, 1942, in Ploubazlanec. French historian.

Beginning in 1890, Seignobos taught at the Sorbonne. He dealt with ancient and medieval history in his early works but later concentrated primarily on modern history. His works, written from a positivist point of view, are filled with concrete historical material; they deal chiefly with political history, especially parliamentary history. Seignobos also wrote works on the methodology of historical research, including Introduction to the Study of History, written in collaboration with C. V. Langlois (Russian translation, 1899).
