Taebaek

(Taebaek-san or Taebaek-sanmaek), a mountain range in Korea, the central section of the East Korea Mountains. It is about 200 km long and has elevations to 1,708 m, at Soraksan; it is composed primarily of granites and gneisses. The Taebaek range consists of several parallel mountain chains with narrow crests and falls sharply to the Sea of Japan. Near the northern extremity is the Kumgang-san range. There are deposits of tungsten ores in the mountains. Mixed forests and dense underbrush grow on the slopes.
