Vysotsk

 

(until 1948, Uuras), a city in Vyborg Raion, Leningrad Oblast, RSFSR, located on Vysotsk Island 12 km southwest of Vyborg. Port on the Gulf of Finland. Connected by railroad with the station Popovo (on the Leningrad-Primorsk-Vyborg line). Population, 1,800 (1969). There are several sanatoriums in Vysotsk. The city was founded by Peter I as a fort and was called Trangsund. It was renamed in memory of the machine gunner K. D. Vysotskii, who died there in 1940 in battle with the White Finns.
