Spuding

Spuding

Spuding was the name applied to the method of drilling oil wells before the introduction of rotary drilling. Spuding involved the repeated dropping of a long, heavy bit to break-up the soil or rock. Periodically, the bit was pulled out of the hole and a tubular bucket (a much heavier version of the Well bucket for a drilled water well) used to haul up the resulting mud.
