Roland de la Platière, Jean-Marie

Born Feb. 18, 1734, in Thizy, Beaujolais; died Nov. 10, 1793, in Bourg-Baudouin, near Rouen. Political figure of the French Revolution.

On the eve of the revolution, Roland was an inspector of manufactures first in Amiens and then in Lyon. He was the author of a number of works on economics. In 1790, Roland became a member of the commune of Lyon. While in Paris in 1791 he was drawn to the Girondins, and he served as minister of the interior in Girondin governments (March to June 1792, August 1792 to January 1793). After the purge of the Girondins in June 1793, Roland fled to Normandy, where he committed suicide upon learning of the execution of his wife, Jeanne-Manon Phlipon Roland de la Platière.
