Roland de la Platière, Jeanne-Manon Phlipon

Born Mar. 17, 1754, in Paris; died there Nov. 8, 1793. Figure in the French Revolution; wife of J.-M. Roland.

A woman of shrewd intelligence with a broad range of interests, Madame Roland had considerable influence on her husband and took part in the political dealings of the Girondins, preparing a number of documents. Leading Girondins, such as Marquis de Condorcet and J. Pétion, met in her salon and greatly valued her opinion. She was arrested with the establishment of the Jacobin dictatorship in 1793 and was guillotined. She left memoirs written while she was in prison.
